Mitochondria Gallery is pleased to present “Reflections of Her," a duo exhibition featuring visual artists Awanle Ayiboro Hawa Ali (Ghanaian, b. 1997) and Boluwatife Victoria Lawal (b. Nigeria, 1995).

"Reflections of Her," critically documents many of the conditions experienced by women in our society. The exhibition examines the intricacies associated with finding one’s authentic self. It tells stories of healing, courage, self identification, and acceptance.

Awanle Ayiboro Hawa Ali (Ghanaian, b. 1997), presents these stories in a series of artworks that take us on a journey of exploration through her personal experiences and those of women around the world. Awanle applies various shades of blue on the skin of her subjects to symbolize freedom from limitations and abuse. The color blue additionally represents royalty in the northern Ghanaian community.
Boluwatife Victoria Lawal (b. Ibadan, 1995) is a contemporary Nigerian artist who paints intimate and conjoined portraits of people in fusions of colours. She combines various hues to represent the synergy between people of different colors and genders. Victoria employs oil and acrylic on canvas, as she explores the realities of the human experience and the beauty of African women.
"Reflections of Her" takes us on a journey of hope. The exhibition surveys what is expected from us based on societal assumptions and the determination to pave our own paths.
