The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual, Serbian-English catalog with texts from Ilija Gubić and the author of the exhibition, Aleksandra Gačić, as well as an interview with Vivaldi Ngenzi, a specialist in museum management of the Rwanda Art Museum. “Art, in spite of Everything” is on view through September 17th 2023.

A brief excerpt about the exhibition can be viewed below.

“Inspired by the life stories and social context in which African artists work, with this exhibition we want to send a message that the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of the modern world fail to shake the urge for creative expression. Moreover, the artists in front of us carefully consider their environment and persistently create. The ideas of their works defy geopolitical frameworks and resonate around the world, and their messages leave a cultural imprint on the global art scene.

All of the artists in this show can be characterized as Afropolitans - artists from the African continent or related to that cultural-historical space who in their aesthetic expression revitalize their own cultural heritage (ethnic, traditional, national), but in a way and through media that make them open to the developments of the global world.

Their experiences of "African" everyday life are connected to the redefinition of the concept of African origin because they are at the same time "citizens of the world" who are troubled by the problems faced by modern humanity, such as climate change, unequal living standards, the influence of the patriarchal model of life and the invisibility of women, as well as "usual" existential concerns, etc.”

Dusabe King Christian (b. 1996) is a visual artist based in Kigali, Rwanda. He studied art at Ecole d’arts de Nyundo in Rwanda. Dusabe King Christian’s practice inspects multifaceted layers of social identity, personal, and familial homages through the immaculate study of ephemeral compositions of discontinuous memories. While contemplating the intimate impact familial backgrounds had on Dusabe, his dexterity was propelled to center around the need to gap the bridge between emotional states and memories, and the want to demystify the purpose of nostalgia as the impetus behind his work either as proof for an elected artificial construct that overwrites the present with the past, or as a transfigured perspective that is allegorically precursive of catharsis.

Dusabe King Christian is represented by Mitochondria Gallery. For more information about Dusabe King Christian please contact us.
