Mitochondria Gallery is honored to present “Inheritance of Belonging,” the North American debut solo exhibition by Rwandan visual artist, Hirwa Bless Ainé Jovial. Inheritance of Belonging reflects on how identity is shaped through family, culture, memory, and the everyday.
Pastor's Kids. Acrylic on canvas. 2026
Deeply rooted in Rwanda’s cultural landscape, Hirwa Bless Ainé Jovial’s work considers belonging as something we inherit, embody, question, and ultimately pass forward.
Central to the exhibition is an exploration of masculinity and the evolving role of men within family and society. Moving beyond conventional definitions of manhood, the works consider masculinity through care, responsibility, strength, tenderness, presence, and connection.
Boys on The Weekend. Acrylic on canvas. 55 x 47 in. Acrylic on Canvas. 2026
Men are portrayed not only as providers or figures of authority, but as fathers, sons, brothers, and mentors whose everyday acts of care and commitment contribute to the strength of families, communities, and future generations.
The exhibition traces the values, behaviors, and understandings of manhood carried across generations, revealing how they shape identity, relationships, and belonging. It makes space for both inheritance and transformation, where masculinity can be reimagined through care, connection, responsibility, and presence.

Through intimate moments of everyday life, Hirwa Bless reveals the ways identity, family, and belonging are woven into one another. Inheritance of Belonging reflects on the legacies we inherit, the people we become, and the traces we leave for those who follow.
