Kel called it, "Riviting and engaging! . . . My only regret is that I have to wait until 2024 for the next one."

Garbage in, garbage out

Mental Health Tip #5

So, you've likely heard the saying, but have you ever applied it to your thoughts and resulting mood?

It turns out that we sometimes have an unhealthy habit of obsessing about the negative or difficult things in our lives (garbage in).

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • running an embarrassing social situation over and over in your head in excruciating detail.
  • reading a negative note/email/review many times while you get more depressed and angry.
  • vent in great detail about the nasty things someone in your life did.
  • lie in bed, unable to sleep as a negative encounter runs through your mind again and again.

The result? Our emotions can turn self-defeating, dark and worried. (garbage out)

You might have ten times the number of positive encounters during a given day, but then spend all your thoughts that evening obsessing about the single negative one.

As far as your mind is concerned, if this is where you're spending all your thinking time, your life must be horrible and you should feel yucky.

What's the simple solution?

Spend less time on garbage thoughts and more time on the amazing ones.

But how? If it were so simple, wouldn't we all do it?

Try this:

  • Start a file, a document, a folder (real or electronic), a shoebox - whatever speaks to you.
  • Fill it with concrete evidence of the amazing parts of your daily life.
  • Examples: kind emails, uplifting notes, awesome pictures, excellent reviews by readers (for us authors), or even your own journal entries recounting wonderful things, big and small.
  • Look at them regularly!

Next time you find yourself trapped in the garbage in and garbage out cycle, grab your collection of happiness and go through it until you feel great again.

If you can do this consistently, you can retrain your mind's habit of dwelling in the dumps and instead enjoy all the wonderful things in your life.

I've been collecting some of my favorite reviews of my books, so when I get a particularly harsh or nasty one, I quit reading immediately and go read my awesome file instead.

I am always smiling by the end.

Try it out and let me know how it works!

Just know how much authors really appreciate your kind and supportive words.

Enjoy an outstanding book this week!
