Microadventures! Mental Health Tip 8
There's a British adventurer, Alastair Humphreys, who coined the term 'microadventure' and says it's "defined as an overnight outdoor adventure that is small and achievable, for normal people with real lives."
Sounds fun, doesn't it?
The idea for using it to help mental health is that at any point, when things are getting overwhelming or the future looks bleak, you can plan a microadventure on the spur of the moment.
It's a fun break from your routine. It'll get you out of the situations that are stressing you out. They can involve nature that is also a known remedy for mental blues. Plus, it can boost your mood with a sense of accomplishment.
Then, you can come back refreshed and relaxed. It only takes a small commitment of time and money. No big planning necessary, and it doesn't have to be overnight.
Need some ideas to get you started?
- Stargazing in Your Backyard: Set up a blanket, bring some snacks, and spend an evening watching the stars.
- Sunrise Hike: Wake up early and hike to a local spot to watch the sunrise.
- Urban Exploration: Spend a day exploring an unfamiliar neighborhood or part of your city.
- Wild Camping: Camp in a wild place close to home. It could be as simple as pitching a tent in a local park (where permitted).
- Outdoor Art Session: Take your sketchbook, paints, or any art supplies to a scenic outdoor location. Spend a few hours creating art inspired by your surroundings. It’s a great way to relax and engage creatively with nature.
- Geocaching: Participate in a geocaching treasure hunt. Use a GPS or a smartphone app to find hidden caches in your area. It's a fun way to explore new places and engage in a modern-day treasure hunt.
- Biking to a Nearby Town: If you have a bike, plan a trip to a nearby town or village. Explore the area, have lunch at a local café, and then bike back. It’s a refreshing way to see new places and get some exercise.
What do you think? Do any of those sound interesting?
What about you? Have you done some small, simple excursions like this to boost your week or month? What are your favorites ideas?
Enjoy a fun read along the way, too! Enjoy!
- Misty :)
