I never/always . . . Your self-talk and crappy feelings. Mental Health Tip 4

May 05, 2023 8:21 pm

Hi friends,

Thanks for the tips on moving! We actually made the first trip successfully, though I admit there were a few white-knuckled moments driving the 26' truck and towing one of our cars behind it.

Oh, and we dropped to less than 30 MPH on some of the steep freeway hills scattered throughout Wyoming. I felt like the Little Engine that Could, hoping we didn't slow to a complete stop a few times. Whew!

The final move is coming soon, so things are a bit crazy. But we are super excited to be closer to the adult kids and grandbaby, so it'll all be worth it.

I also just wrapped up the first draft of Emerging Rebel, the second epic-length book in my Shieldwall Academy series which will be available to my Patreon subscribers first, Royal Road second, and once edited and polished, will be published as a full book about six months after the first book, Awakening Horde, comes to Amazon and Audible this July!

Thanks for all your support and encouragement!

And some great news! If you missed out on the Aftermath series Steph and I wrote, it's now out in a 6-book series with a new release price of $0.99 or Free to read in Kindle Unlimited!

That's 2300+ pages for less than a dollar!

Here are a couple of the fun 5-star reviews for the first of the six books:

"This book cost me sleep" - Jon V. Theisen

"Gripping story!" - Nathan McArthur

"This book is a must Read. Action packed. Great characters. Real-life situations and how to deal with them. It's a preppers go to book." - Laurie Harmon

The premise of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, a very effective treatment for mental health issues, is that our thoughts come first and then cause our unhappy or anxious feelings.

So, the solution to feeling better is to change the thoughts running through our minds, especially the unnoticed ones in the background.

There are ten types of these "Twisted Thought" patterns.

Here's one that I find myself often having to watch out for:

Overgeneralization (I always/never . . .)

Mental Health Tip 4

"I always mess up."

"I never get good grades."

"I always get passed over for a promotion."

"I never win."

"Any diets I try always fail."

"I can never lose weight."

The list of examples is endless and such an easy trap for us to fall into.

When we have a setback in life, our thoughts easily overgeneralize that that failure will now always happen . . . forever.

No wonder it makes us feel horrible and worried!

So, what do you do?

First, sit down and write out the destructive thoughts, so you know what's playing in your mind.

Second, write a counter to them that is more realistic. How does this list sound?

"I mess up sometimes, but I usually figure out a solution."

"I occasional get a bad grade, but get many more good ones."

"I may not have been promoted yet, but I can make a list of ways to do better and get noticed."

"I enjoy playing, even if I don't win every time."

"Even when I don't lose weight on a diet, I usually have more energy and feel positive about taking action."

I hope rewriting some of your thoughts helps how you feel!

I hear reading a good story can help, too! I know it does for me :)
