Pic of Me versus a Huge Fire - the CERT Program. Be Prepared Tip 21

Hi friends,

Check out this awesome picture my CERT teacher got of me learning to extinguish a raging hot gasoline/diesel fire (safely lit in a pan in a safe area):

It was a rush!!

After the firefighters had us practice multiple times, the adrenaline wore off enough for me to get better at extinguishing a fire. Shifting for a better angle is important as well as aiming at the base of the flames, instead of spraying too high.

Scroll down for an explanation of the training offered by this volunteer organization (CERT) open to anyone who's interested.

First, I have a quick ask:

For anyone with an Amazon account, would you mind clicking the "+Follow" button on my two author names (on the top left of the page)?

Follow M. Zaugg

Follow Misty Zaugg

It's free, takes a few seconds and really helps me out.

You won't get any spam. When I have a new book out, Amazon will notify you in the Kindle app or via email, depending on your settings.

The more people following my author names, the more it motivates Amazon to show my books to new readers.

Thanks!

CERT: Community Emergency Response Team

I just moved out here to Utah and happened across a CERT booth during a summer fair. I had taken part in the program back in Michigan and was excited to join in my new town.

What is it?

A program designed in Los Angeles in the 80's, CERT trains local volunteers to respond and help with disasters when there aren't enough first responders.

If you live in the U.S., there are CERT programs in every state. Contact your local government offices to find out when the next training is.

You'll usually meet for a few weeks in the evening, learning basic disaster response skills: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Along the way, you get to do things like put out actual fires under the supervision of the fire department. Last time, we also learned basic medical skills to triage, stop bleeding and help the injured.

Our final will be a mock disaster where they bring in actors and do their best to simulate an actual situation, so you can practice everything you learned.

They give each CERT volunteer a green backpack with basic personal protection equipment like a helmet, goggles, gloves and identifying vest. It's up to each volunteer to add other supplies that would be useful in a disaster.

The program is free for the volunteers, costing only minimal time and effort to join the ranks of those ready to help if things get bad.

It is the perfect amount of general disaster training everyone can use and a way to help your local community.

Has anyone else joined their local CERT programs? I'd love to hear if you have experiences to share!

Thanks for everyone's support! And stay safe out there!

- Misty :)
