How can the scorching sun give you clean water? Be Prepared Tip 20

Jul 21, 2023 8:11 pm

Hi friends,

Are your summers as busy as mine? It seems as soon as we finish one activity, it seems another one starts.

And then there's the heat.

I mentioned a few ways to keep cool last time and got some good feedback from readers.

Sandy's tip: It is also important to hydrate the day before you go out to play! Found out the hard way.

Wendy's Tip: Gaiters do everything that a cooling towel does, plus they help keep bugs off you and won't fall off your neck.

The continuation of high heat waves in lots of areas made me consider the next important thing to consider if we needed to survive outside during a heat wave:

Water!

How to Distill Water with Heat and Sun!

The idea is to use the sun to heat up contaminated water. The warm water vapor will rise, leaving behind the contaminants. When it contacts a cool plastic or glass surface, it will condense back to water, except this water will be purified and safe to drink (as long as all the surfaces are clean)

Here's the idea for a simple, small solar still: (Bigger ones built in pits or even over something like a backyard pool are also possible)

Materials Needed:

  • Large glass bowl or container - so the sun can warm it more easily
  • Inner smaller jar - used to collect the distilled water
  • Plastic covering
  • Small weight
  • optional drinking tube to get the water out without disturbing everything.
  • Source of contaminated water - rain, stream, pond, even urine.

Instructions:

Choose the Location:

  • Find a location in full sun (easy around here)

Set up the Distillation Apparatus:

  • Fill the large glass container with the contaminated water.
  • Place the smaller container inside, making sure the lip is above the surface of the dirty water.
  • Insert clean tubing into the inner container, if using.
  • Cover the entire thing tightly with plastic wrap or piece of clean, clear tarp.
  • place a small weight on top, centered over the inner container. This directs the clean water that condenses on the underside of the plastic toward the inner container to drip inside.
  • Wait. Wait. Wait some more.
  • After a couple of hours you should have the beginnings of clean water collecting in the inner container.

The downside is how slow this process is.

You can speed this up if you have fuel available and would like to heat the water. Propping a clean piece of glass at an angle over a simmering pot of dirty water can also collect clean condensation to trickle down into a collecting container.

Let me know if you have any ideas to speed this up or more ideas should you be stuck with lots of contaminated water and need to transform it into something drinkable.

I hope you're having a wonderful summer!
