A flower pot refrigerator during a power outage? Be Prepared Tip 18

Apr 07, 2023 8:11 pm

Hi friends,

I'm buried in the middle of the FLOOD of paperwork involved in buying a new home. We've done it in the past, but I keep forgetting how much never-ending red tape is involved.

We've also decided to do a "pre-move", which means my husband and I will fill up a moving truck, add a towing trailer with our electric car and take a long, slow three days to get across the country three weeks before the actual move.

This lets us get a bunch of stuff there and not have to tow anything during the final move when we'll have all the kids with us. This also means we're on a deadline to go through and pack up half the house in less than three weeks.

Wish us luck! This is nuts - sigh.

And for those of us who like to prepare for disasters, I came across a fun, simple way to keep food cold during a power outage that I wanted to share . . .

. . . scroll down for the details.

Today's book is Deadly Escape, the second in the completed disaster trilogy Steph and I wrote together: (Fun note: My oldest daughter did the cover!)

Plus, it starts out with a great hack to use hair to tie a scalp wound closed in an emergency. I love including practical preparedness ideas in our stories!

Be Prepared Tip 18

So, next time you lose power and don't have a generator, head to your gardening supplies to keep food cold.

Here's what to do:

  1. Choose a ceramic flowerpot that is large enough to fit the food or items you want to keep cool.
  2. Place a layer of sand or gravel at the bottom of the pot.
  3. Place your food or items inside the pot, and cover them with a layer of wet cloth or paper towels.
  4. Cover the pot with a wet cloth or towel, and place it in a cool, shaded area.
  5. Make sure to keep the cloth or towel wet, and replace it regularly to maintain a cool temperature inside the pot.

How it works:

The porous material of the ceramic pot allows for air to flow through, which in turn, cools down the wet cloth and keeps the contents of the pot cool as well.

(Like other evaporative coolers, this works best in a dry environment versus a humid one)

If you've tried something like this, I'd love to hear how it worked out - let me know!

And anyone who has tips on making a cross-country move less stressful, feel free to speak up.

You're the best!
