How long should a book be? Misty's Writing Update
Mar 01, 2024 10:05 pm
Hi friends,
Well, I got my first two-star review on my latest book, Emerging Rebel, by a reviewer who claimed it was:
"Generally, just boring for most of the book."
Ouch! That's not something any author likes to read.
Thankfully, most of the other reviews said the complete opposite:
"a story pace that keeps the reader engaged"
"The writing is brilliant. You’ll find it difficult to not want to read the book in one sitting. It’s that hard to put down. So looking forward to book 3!"
"A Joy to Read"
Whew! I make sure to read a few of the positive ones whenever I run into a not-so-nice one. Gotta keep the writing spirits up!
And considering there are 206 ratings (36 written reviews) with the majority 4- and 5-stars, most people who picked up the book thinking they would enjoy it, did.
And as we all know, everyone has different tastes, so it didn't work for everyone.
What about you? If you read the book, I'd love to hear which reviewers you agree with.
And if you've already read Emerging Rebel - Elemental Battlefield, book 3, is up for pre-order. Check out the fun, new cover:
And now I'm over halfway done with the first draft of book 4. I just crossed the 100,000 word mark - scroll down and let me know what you think about how long a book should be.
But first, here are this week's books and promotions supporting my newsletter:

How long should a book be?
So, my latest series averages over 200k words per book, which is about 800 pages in an average-sized paperback (fewer if the book is printed in a bigger size).
But the number of pages got me curious:
What do all of you think about book length? Which is your favorite?
- 800+: The longer the better. More pages! More books! If I love a book, I never want it to end.
- ~ 500 pages: I like a long-ish book, but want the story to wrap up at some point, right?
- ~ 300 pages: This is the sweet spot. Just enough to have a great story, but not long enough to lose interest.
- ~ 150 pages: When I'm in the mood to read, I want to read the entire story in one, not-too-long, sitting. Kind of like a movie.
Click 'Reply' and send me a quick vote of which one you think is best. Your vote will help me decide on a future series I'm contemplating.
Thanks for your feedback!
Curl up and enjoy a book of the perfect length this week!
