Prepper Tip 29: Your Water Heater = 40 Gallons of Clean Water

Most people know how important clean water is during an emergency.

But what many don’t know? You’re already sitting on a hidden tank of safe water in most houses. Your water heater.

Most standard water heaters hold 30–60 gallons of water, and it’s potable (drinkable). You just need to know how to access it.

Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the water heater by setting it to "vacation" or off.
  2. At the bottom of the tank, look for a drain valve (usually a spigot).
  3. Attach a clean hose or place a container underneath.
  4. Open a nearby hot water faucet to let air in since otherwise there is a vacuum preventing water from flowing.
  5. Then open the valve and collect water.

Note: If you haven't flushed your water heater for a while, there can be mineral deposite and even some bacteria slime (if kept under 120 deg F). If so, flush regularly to keep this from happening during an emergency, or filter/boil/bleach to be safe.

This should be enough water for a family for days, just sitting there in your basement or utility closet.

Pro tip: Don’t wait until an emergency. Take 10 minutes this week to locate your water heater, find the drain valve, and make sure you know how it works.

It’s one of those “hidden in plain sight” prepper tricks that could make all the difference.
