What happens when you don't own the products you buy?

Hey Friend,

Funimation, a company that makes and sells (mostly Japanese) animation shows and movies, is closing its "digital doors".

The kicker:

All of the digital shows and movies their users have purchased over the years will be GONE.

They are completely losing access to everything they purchased.

Unless they (illegally) pirate it.

Amazon Kindle has done this before, too.

Imagine buying things and you think you own them, but then they're removed and there's nothing you can do about it.

You log in to watch that movie you paid $19.99 for and it's just...gone.

Money down the drain.

That's what's happening when we don't own anything anymore.

Steam has done it with video games.

Bandcamp and Amazon have both done it with music.

The tech-side of the problem is DRM - Digital Rights Management.

These companies put DRM on the digital products you sell them, and the "rights" they are "managing" keep the control in their hands.

You agree to it in the Terms of Service that nobody reads.

So, these companies can revoke your access at any time.

Even though you may pay $10 for an album, if it's not DRM Free, you're really only renting it.

The solution:

Support DRM Free artists.

There are lots of us out there, me being just one of them.

When you buy my music, you own it.

Not only is it DRM Free, but it's Creative Commons.

That means you can use it however want (YouTube, Twitch, in your business, whatever).

You can even share it.

When I sell you something, you own it.

The thing is, without people supporting DRM Free and Creative Commons culture...it can't exist.

P.S. Here's the reality:

Without us, everything you enjoy will soon become rented.

We're out here fighting that.

You deserve to own the things you purchase.

We're fighting for you.

But it costs money.
