Spark creativity and connection in workshops

Hey ,
Yesterday, I wrapped my 2nd workshop in 5 days. It was an exhilarating and consuming experience… and I definitely want to continue facilitating them.
Last week, I led an hour-long workshop for a new audience, teaching community owners how to build their most effective landing pages inside the group: Learn.Community.
And, yesterday, I led a completely different and new hour-long session for another new audience. In it, I shared how online businesses owners could get the most out of Wix, whether they were getting started or had an existing website inside the group: Smart Passive Income with Pat Flynn.
So in this week's edition, you'll learn:
- about the power of promoting your own workshops,
- how to surprise and delight your attendees,
- why mental health and wellness is crucial during live sessions, and
- strategies to encourage participation in your workshops.
And at the bottom, I've crafted a free gift for you too. 😉
1. Attract your audience early
I promoted each workshop in the community to attract more live attendees. To do so, I recorded a 60 second "announcement" video to:
- Share my excitement
- Show myself on camera for approachability
- Invite members to ask questions early on
- Inform what we'd be learning about for visual or auditory learners
This got people excited (liked and commented), earned 100+ views within 1 day, and doubled the workshop attendee count.
In addition to those above, I also teased a special gift I created for each person…
2. Surprise and delight your attendees
I provided a customized gift for free to anyone that attended or watched the replay. Last week, I shared with you that I created a detailed resource guide for community builders on how to design their landing pages with intention.
I complied my years of experience designing landing pages to craft this guide. My partner (👋🏼 Hey Joehey) and I researched several existing communities pages, course creators, and coaches to determine:
- what sections to include
- what should appear in those sections
- what are great examples of all that
- and how to practice your newly learned knowledge
After putting a lot of hours into creating this, it turned out to be much more than a resource guide. Instead it was actually a template or worksheet to build your most effective landing page.
⭐️ I am planning to include this for my students in the Landing Page course. So, if you're already a student, that is just one lovely update coming soon. More exciting news ahead.
Then, I doubled the surprise and delight element… by including a free website and review feedback session inside the resource guide.
For the Wix Workshop, I've made myself available for a free coaching call. On the call, we will discuss their personal, professional, and business goals — and I will outline exactly how they can get the most out of using Wix. There's double surprise and delight element waiting for them too… hehe.
3. Be a role model for mental health
Within each session, I dedicated time for mental health and wellness. Before the learning content of each workshop, I made time for each of us to connect and reset.
We all live different lives, and when we're busy we tend to let go of things that we should do, or bring us joy. These can be simple things, such as: taking a walk, eating lunch, or showing appreciation for the little things.
Behind every screen is another human, so I want to be sure to not only value them, but give space for them to value themselves. This turned out to be one of the most memorable moments in each session for me and many others.
4. Encourage participation in live sessions
I made each session an actual workshop by encouraging participation throughout.
I prefer to use the literal term "workshop" when I am facilitating a workshop versus what I tend see (which are actually webinars). In my sessions, I enjoy:
- inspiring active learning
- unlocking creativity and exploration
- creating connection and fostering community
Did you know it takes people an average of 20 seconds to formulate a response from your question? Another average is the time teachers leave after asking their questions: 0.9 seconds. Pro tip: Get comfortable in silence, and you'll get some wonderful responses to continue or start a dialogue.
To ensure my workshops are getting the right message across, I tend to check in by asking questions throughout. I leave space for discussion and allow other members the ability to answer each other's questions. And, after doing so acknowledging their contributions — this makes people feel valued in a session, and they deserve to be.
That's what I learned this week.
