what is a brand, really?

Hey ,

Your brand is not your logo.

It's not your product or service.

A brand is also not the promise you make to your audience.

In all my readings, research, and practice, Marty Neumeier has said it best:

A brand is a customer's gut feeling about a product, service, or company.

So, you're really not creating one brand.

Instead, every single member of your audience is creating a perception of who you are and what you represent: your actual brand.

Marty goes even further to state that:

Your brand is your reputation.

ok, Matt… but who's Marty Neumeier?

Marty Neumeier started as a graphic designer and copywriter in the 1970s. In 1984, when the Macintosh launched, he moved to Silicon Valley to help companies like Apple, Netscape, HP, Adobe, and Google build their brands.

Questions to ask yourself?

  1. What is the reputation my brand has created?
  2. What impressions am I leaving for my audience? For myself?
  3. How do I shape it to be the one I want to leave behind?
  4. How do I create consistency for my business' messaging?

Check out some of our past lessons to get a head start on this:

  1. Start with why
  2. Nail your offer
  3. Design a value-based business
  4. Survey your audience

If you carefully craft these responses and constantly check in with your audience, you'll be on your way to developing a strong brand.
