Having the right systems can change your entire life.

I've often heard the concept of turning work 'off,' but it’s always been harder for me to do this when working for myself than when working for someone else. I constantly have ideas during everyday activities like cooking, cleaning, running, biking, reading, or listening to a podcast. These ideas can range from how to respond to an email to new product concepts or better ways to organize my work.

Then come the long tangents that my mind goes down. This cycle repeats itself. Sometimes I capture that info, but most of the time it disappears into the busyness of the day.

When I first started my online-based business, I knew it was important for clients and prospective clients to reach me. So, I left my email and phone number in my emails and responded almost instantly. I inherently trusted others. It soon felt like I was working 24 hours a day—distracted, busy, and stressed.

I soon implemented a calendar appointment system, where people could find a time that matched my availability. Though, leaving availability all day every day didn’t really change anything because I may need to be working at any point.

I've since fixed that and I feel like I'm living truer to my values. Today, I am available for a brief window of time, once per week, for calls, casual chats, meetings, etc. Sometimes I make exceptions, but I decide when.
