Hey ,

Your domain name is one of the first things your audience will notice about your business. It's how they'll find you online, and it will be a part of your brand identity. So it's important to choose a good one!

If you already have one, good! These will still be a great reference for you to meet or revise.

Here are three tips to help you choose the perfect domain name for your business:

1. Keep it short and sweet

The shorter your domain name is, the easier it will be for your audience to remember and type into their browser. Aim for something that's around 6-8 characters long.

Short domain names are easy to remember, which is why they're so popular. When users see a long, complicated URL, they may not remember it correctly or be able to type it correctly into their browser. A short, simple domain name is more likely to be remembered and more likely to be found online.

Often times your own name can be your domain, and that's easy to remember. This is really useful if your brand is you. Depending on your personal preference, if you have a personal brand — I'd recommend leaning into using your name as your domain for your online business.

That being said, sometimes yourname[dot]com is taken.

A common question I get asked is: does a .com matter. Short answer: No.

While a .com is the most common and recognized top-level domain extension, it's only 1 of 1500+ (IANA). A .com is also not required for your business to exist. Sure, there's a slight advantage whe using a .com for your domain, since many of us are already familiar with the experience of typing .com in our browsers.

However, if you do a great job in your messaging, a .com is not necessary.

As mentioned, there are many other top-level domain extensions, like .net or .co, and they are still recognizable for your audience and ensure trust.

Your domain name alone won't cause your discoverability to go down. Rest assured, your users can still find your business online.

2. Make it easy to spell

It's also important to choose a domain name that's easy to spell. If it's hard to spell, users may end up mistyping it when they try to find your website. Misspelled versions of your domain name may also show up in search engine results, which can be confusing and frustrating for your audience.

Using hyphens or numbers in your domain name can make it harder for your audience to find you online. They might forget to include the hyphen, or they might type in the wrong number. So, try to avoid using them if possible.

Pro Tip: You can purchase additional domains. For example: these could be common misspellings and / or the full, longer version of your business name. Then, forward that domain to your preferred domain. This is especially helpful if you know the confusion will occur with your users.

3. Choose a domain name that reflects your business

Your domain name should reflect the essence of your business or product / service offerings. It should be easy for your audience to understand what your business is all about just by reading the domain name. This will help users find you more easily online, and it will make your brand more memorable. So take some time to think about what you want your domain name to say about your company.

Following these tips will help you choose the perfect domain name for your business.

So get started today and pick a name that's short, sweet, and relevant to your brand. Good luck!
