Taking a break is good for you, .

Studies show that even taking a short break from your work dramatically improves your ability to focus for longer periods.

When I worked for Apple, it was the first time I had actually experienced a protected work / life balance in my professional career. My day was organized in such a way that mandatory breaks were strategically placed in my schedule, including an hour-long lunch break. When I took my breaks, they were respected by the rest of my team. This behavior allowed me to separate myself from intense work and deep thinking daily.

Most of the time, I would go for walks. In fact, simply adding more movement to your day provides so many health benefits on its own. Admittedly, I didn't know this at the time — I'm just naturally a mover. 🏃🏽

Since these breaks from my work were intentional, I could feel my renewed sense of energy each time I returned.

I was able to press pause and allow my mind to wander. Sometimes, this meant that I found new & creative solutions to problems we encountered at work.

When you're running your own business, it's not easy to take a break.

It could feel like the difference between getting your next client or customer and not.

Though, taking that break allows you to be more focused and make better decisions long term.

Not providing yourself with that space for a break could lead to burnout.

In fact, here is a medically reviewed article sharing signs of what burnout might look and feel like, as well as the benefits of taking breaks.

📚 Taking a Break from Work (and Why You Need It)

As you're reading this, I'm actually taking a break from work: a "staycation".

I'm planning to go for bike rides, read a book (or two), cook some new meals (I love to cook), and enjoy time with my family.

I know that I'll come back fully refreshed and better than before.

I'll see you then!

What do you do to refresh? Reply and I'll get back to you (next week).

Enjoy,

Matt
