Dear Family,
A couple notes back, I shared a thought on patterns.
How most people don’t recognize them. They just live inside them.
How over time, those patterns show up across money, family, and life.
What I didn’t get into then is what sits underneath those patterns.
Why two people can experience the same situation…And walk away with completely different outcomes. It’s not just behavior. It’s how they interpret what’s happening in real time.
That’s what mental models are.
The frameworks you use to make decisions. The lens you use to process risk, opportunity, and uncertainty. Here’s what I’ve seen: the situation is rarely the differentiator. Money comes in, for example. One person slows down, allocates, and plans. Another spends quickly, assuming it won’t last.
Same moment. Different model.
Over time, that gap compounds into something much bigger than money.
It shows up in how you lead your household. How you handle pressure.
How you show up for your family.
The inputs change. The thinking patterns don’t.
That’s what mental models are doing. They’re quietly reinforcing the patterns already in place.
- Second-order thinking, for example, is the difference between reacting to what feels good now and considering where that decision leads.
- Opportunity cost is the recognition that every decision carries a trade-off, whether you acknowledge it or not.
- Margin of safety is understanding that life rarely goes exactly as planned, and building in room for that reality.
- Compounding is what turns small, repeated decisions into long-term outcomes, whether intentional or not.
These aren’t just financial concepts.
They show up in your time, your energy, your relationships, and your household. We study these models so we can see the pattern while we’re still inside of it. Because once you can see it, you have a choice.
To continue it. Or to change it.
Over the next few days, ask yourself the following question: What mental model is driving the decisions in your household right now, and did you choose it?
If you’d like, feel free to email me your thoughts.
