Dear Family,
It's no secret that at LUX, we have a bias toward serving communities that have historically been overlooked and underestimated, particularly Black doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners.
That's not to say these are the only people we work with, but we'd be lying to ourselves if we didn't acknowledge that a significant portion of our clientele comes from these communities. One of the challenges many of us face, especially when operating in environments where we're often the only person who looks like us, is learning how to quiet the little voice in our heads that tells us we're not good enough, qualified enough, or deserving of the opportunities in front of us.
It's incredibly easy to talk ourselves out of greatness because of socioeconomic circumstances, systemic inequalities, or environmental factors that are largely outside our control.
I was thinking about this yesterday while speaking with a client who is genuinely one of the most impressive human beings I've ever met. This gentleman holds a law degree, an MBA, multiple master's degrees, and is the founder of a venture-backed startup. By almost every conventional measure, he's accomplished more than most people could ever dream of.
