Dear Family,
All over the internet, everyone is talking about AI.
Depending on what you read, we are either standing at the beginning of the greatest technological revolution in human history or staring directly into the abyss. I’ll be the first to admit that I am no expert on AI. I cannot tell you what the labor market will look like five years from now, which companies will win, or which jobs will disappear.
I am also skeptical of anyone who speaks about the future with that much certainty.
What I do know is that when everyone is yelling, it becomes increasingly important to separate the signal from the noise. There is clearly a signal here. AI is changing the way people work. Companies are investing billions of dollars into it, and people are already using these tools to do things that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. It would be foolish to ignore that.
But acknowledging the signal does not mean we have to panic over every headline or accept every prediction about the future as fact.
Doom and gloom has always attracted attention. Fear gets clicks. Certainty. It is much easier to capture someone's attention by telling them everything is about to fall apart than by saying, “Something important is happening. We don't fully understand it yet. Let's pay attention.”
I think there is wisdom in the latter.
You do not need to become an AI expert overnight. You do not need to spend every waking hour following the latest developments. You certainly do not need to have the next ten years figured out.
But you should pay attention.
Learn enough to understand how the world around you is changing. Experiment with the new tools available to you. Ask questions. Read widely. Talk to people who know more than you do. Most importantly, resist the temptation to outsource your thinking to whatever headline happens to be in front of you.
AI may change the world in ways we cannot yet fully understand. That is a reason to stay curious, not a reason to panic.
From LUX, With Love
Matt
