We hope you and your families had a wonderful summer, whether it was packed with activity or a great deal of much needed downtime!
As the season begins to come to an end as we head into fall, we have some great information in regard to vaccines and back-to-school awareness to keep in mind.

Vaccines are NOT Necessary to Attend Public School in Canada
As kids return to school this fall, we want to take the time to remind parents that in Canada, vaccines are not necessary to attend public school, regardless of what may be said by school jurisdictions. There are times that parents may feel worried when contacted either by school or healthcare authorities concerning their children's vaccine schedules and whether they are “up to date.” Rest assured that this has not changed.
We have provided forms for schools in both Ontario and New Brunswick that you can submit with your child's school which will exempt them from any vaccine “requirements” for entry, which are downloadable and fillable. Simply hand it into the school administrator and know that it needs to be honored, as well as in circumstances where vaccines are being administered within the school throughout the year.

Guide to an Effective Meeting with Your Child's Teacher
It is imperative that parents know what is happening within their child’s classroom. Mama Bears is providing a thorough and straight-forward guide on how to have an effective meeting with their child's teacher. It will bring you through specific questions parents should be asking in regard to:
- Their child’s internet browsing history when using school computers, and when their child will have access to computers and what measures are put in place to ensure appropriate behavior and integrity
- Third party organizations which are set in place to come in and speak to the students
- Surveys planned to be conducted with students
- Opposite sex washrooms
- Books the children have access to or are going to be read to them during class hours
Remember that you are the ultimate authority over your children and what they are being exposed to. Teachers are to adhere to parental authorization at all times, despite what schools may think.
However, we do want to encourage you to use productive dialogue and come from a place of understanding that both you and their teachers - in most circumstances - do want the best for your child.

Attention Parents of Ontario With Children in Public School
There has been a new directive released by the Ontario Education Ministry with respect to guest speakers and their planned activities in schools, starting in the 2024–2025 school year.
This is crucial to be aware of as a parent of a public schooler, and we encourage you to become familiar with this directive. We have included a sample letter below which you can send to your child’s principal to ensure you are notified of any guest speakers who are to attend your child's school.

Monday September 9 2024 -CHA New Health Series: ‘THE EMERGENCY ROOM IS CLOSED!! What do you do?’
This is the next in the ongoing Canada Health Alliance New Health Education series, and in this remarkable and unique 4-part course CHA President Dr. Bill Code will be giving invaluable advice on what you could, and should do when you have a medical emergency but your local Emergency Room is closed and you are essentially on your own!
This would never have been something we would have seriously thought possible just five or six years ago, but now there is a good chance your nearest Emergency Room is going to be temporarily closed at some point due to staff shortages, equipment failures or the overwhelming demand. If this happens when you are trying to get help for a loved one, what should you do to help stabilize the situation and improve their chances of a full recovery?
This training course is exactly what you need, and you want to do it before you need it!
