I know the world is still turning around us. It has to be. But on this tiny section of beach, everything comes to a standstill as Nate tucks my hair behind my ear, brushing my cheek with his thumb.
I’m a practical person. A skeptic of the highest order. I don’t believe in fate or true love or that our lives are anything other than a blip in the cosmic totality.
In short, I. Don’t. Romanticize. Shit.
But his touch leaves a trail of warmth over my skin that spreads until it reaches the blood frantically pumping through my veins and that warmth becomes a wildfire.
I can’t tell if the roar I’m hearing is from the ocean battering the shore or my pulse thundering in my own ears. And even after dark, the summer air is still warm enough to make the hair stick to the back of my neck, so someone needs to explain the shiver that runs up my spine when Nate’s gaze settles on my lips.
And while they’re at it, maybe they can explain the yearning tug that wraps itself around my chest and inexorably pulls me toward him. That would be heartily appreciated, especially since I can’t seem to escape it.
Not that I’ve tried very hard.
Or at all.
