What's Next for 3D? OpenAI's 3D breakthrough and AI Acquisitions
May 16, 2024 7:50 am
Welcome back to 3D News, the newsletter for digital artists. Every week, I handpick the best links to ensure you stay ahead in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The Evolution of 3D
3D has undergone many transformations over the years. From a labor-intensive process to a much more streamlined approach.
- Projects required starting each 3D model from scratch, but now we have vast model libraries of ready-to-use assets.
- Textures were manually created from photographs, today we have platforms like Textures.com and material presets.
- Advances in lighting techniques now allow easy access to IES profiles and HDR images.
- Rendering has progressed from scanline to ray-tracing, complemented by AI denoisers and cloud rendering.
Streamlining tedious tasks at every step of the process has always been happening, just not as fast as it is right now, which is making it more apparent.
Why it matters: In our competitive, fast-paced industry, efficiency and quality are paramount. What might the next stage in the Evolution of 3D look like? That’s exactly what we’ll be exploring in next week's video.

Freepik Acquires Gen AI Upscaler Magnific
Design platform Freepik has completed the acquisition of Magnific, the AI-powered image upscaling and enhancement tool. I am a big fan of Magnific and it will feature in next week's video.
Why it matters: Magnific scaled to 725,000 users within just five months, which shows not only the popularity of tools like this but also the rapid rate of adaption. Who’s more likely to win that next competition, someone that uses AI tools like this, or someone who isn’t? All the more reason to watch next week's video on the YouTube channel. 🙂

Meshy-2.5 Launches AI Texture Editing Offering More Control for AI 3D Modelling
AI 3D modeling continues to improve with Meshy 2.5 introducing the ability to refine textures on AI-generated 3D models using brushstrokes and text prompts.
Why it matters: Like most of AI in the creative field, AI tools lacked control over the final result. This is where Meshy’s AI Texture Editing is excelling compared to other AI 3d modeling tools. This feature is currently only available for Pro members.

OpenAI Explores 3D Object Synthesis with GPT-4o
OpenAI unveiled GPT-4o, a new model integrating text, vision and audio. And while it is very cool, something that was not mentioned, but found deep in the blog was 3D object synthesis. The blog post details how 3D renderings are created from multiple viewpoints using specific input prompts, culminating in a reconstructed 3D model based on images.
