Welcome back to 3D News, the newsletter for digital artists. Every week, I handpick the best links to help you navigate the quirks of working as a digital artist.

Here are 3 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

3ds Max 2025 is here…

Autodesk has rolled out 3ds Max 2025, introducing OpenColorIO, which will become the default color management system, improvements to the Bake to Texture tool, and updates to 3dsMaxUSD. The release also sees advancements in retopology tools, an overhaul of the GPU Renderer in Arnold, and the introduction of Global Light Sampling in Volumes. Additional features such as an updated Global Search and a new Menu Editor aim to bolster productivity.

Despite the updates, I am not seeing many reasons to rush to upgrading immediately. Maybe if we could bring over all the installed scripts and plugins from our current version I would be more keen.

But it’s still nice to see my image being used on the 3ds Max feature page 🙂

What's New in Chaos Vantage 2, Update 3

More excitingly, in my opinion, is the latest update for Chaos Vantage. In this video, Product Manager, Simeon Balabanov, gives us a walkthrough of the highlights, including VRayBlendMtl support for crafting complex materials like wet surfaces, and the ability to render precise masks with Multi Mattes. Updates also cover live link host indication, enhanced desktop responsiveness, and a new view filter for light gizmos.
