My secret to upgrading skills without creating more projects!

Ahoy!
Ever thought "What if I could boost my skills without necessarily creating more projects?"
A rather tempting proposition, wouldn't you agree?
Well, you're in for a treat…
Today we will look at how you can refine your skills without piling on more projects.
I heard that the Samurai swordsmiths had one goal. To craft the perfect sword.
Their approach to achieving this goal was fascinating. Instead of creating an entire sword from scratch every day, they focused on refining specific parts of the process. One day, they'd concentrate on perfecting the curve of the blade. Another day, they'd focus on the material composition, another on the balance, and so on.
Their philosophy was simple: By mastering each element individually, they’ll craft a more perfect sword overall.
Well, what's that got to do with 3D?
I asked myself, "How can I hone each element of my process?"
So I wrote down the steps I go through to complete a project.
- Modeling 2. Materials > 3. Lighting > 4. Rendering > 5. Post-production
Then I thought, out of these steps which of these, if I practiced more would have the most impact on my quality of work? The one that stood out was post-production.
Sharpening my post-production skills would improve my 3D work without having to make more 3D work. I could improve the projects I already had in my portfolio.
Now, don't get me wrong. I was applying post-production to my projects all along. But to truly excel at details like color grading, contrast adjustments, and visual effects, I needed more practice.
So, I turned to Photoshop.
What's awesome about this approach is the speed of feedback. I could edit a render a day in as little as 30 minutes. Post Production has now become one of my favorite parts of the 3d visualization process.
Not only did I practice more, because the task didn’t seem as big. My portfolio improved massively and opened new work avenues and expanded my network, boosting business on the whole.
So, here's a question for you: what skill can you leverage that you can practice regularly, that will positively affect the skillset you need?
