Burnout or just tired; the Key difference

Feb 10, 2026 3:28 pm

The significant difference between being a burned-out employee and being tired lies in the symptoms, which may seem very similar on the surface but are subtle in nature.

Not every tired person eventually burns out; however, every burnout individual has been tired for quite some time.

So before you burn out, you end up being tired several times. And every time, the Tired you, let the tiredness get buried deep down inside you. It adds one layer, and eventually, over a period of time, each layer compounds to an eventual burnout.

My Burnout Story

In my first two jobs spanning years, I would work more than twelve hours and yet was back in the office early, up and ready to take on the day. I was highly engaged in my work and equally successful.

There was no single factor that contributed to the success, but there were several, from the supervisor who taught me leadership lessons to our client, who gave me my first international opportunity.

Then there were days when I felt tired, but I soon regained my energy through sleep and various recreational activities.

So, what then led to my various micro tiredness episodes, eventually ---> to the burnout?

The answer lay in my constant approach to lull the internal self that screamed, and I silenced it for years.

We are all gifted with an inner self and a compass that often points us to situations, people and events that can tire us, draining our energy in ongoing episodes of accumulated tiredness.

It's the constant cycle and accumulation left "neglected " that converts tiredness to burnout.

So,

If you have more than a decade of experience at work, and you have a track record of being a high performer, and in the present day, you find yourself

  • Tired and unsure of what you really, really want?
  • Feeling that there is something amiss
  • Not very enthusiastic about the way the present role is shaping up
  • Every time you have time for yourself, you are likely to be in deep thought about the three points cited above, or perhaps more.
  • Afraid of success and change
  • Lacking a connection, asking yourself -Where do I belong? on a frequent basis
  • Feeling isolated from the peer group.

If any of this sounds familiar, pause and let me tell you: this is not just tiredness, it's a telltale sign of burnout.

Burnout is not a sign of weakness; it’s the consequence of giving more energy than we ever allowed ourselves to restore.
