We protect what we love

FRIDAY . 19 . 03 . 21 .

Hi there, I'm Simon.

There's something a little poetic about writing this today as I sit here looking at the mountains and the forest in the Tarkine preparing for takayna Trail 2021 (an event I co-created three years ago to support the Bob Brown Foundation's work to protect the majestic Tarkine from logging).

It's also here, a year ago that I met the wonderful family at For Wild Places. Over the last 12 months, I have the absolute pleasure of working with the crew to pull together what is a trail runner-led organisation that creates the next breed of SPORTS ACTIVISTS.

I thank you whole-heartedly for you being part of For Wild Places.

I'm driven to connect and activate the trail community as a force to protect our public lands —the lands on which we run!

When I'm not working on FWP, I can be found chasing my pigs, dogs and parrots around on my 40-acre farm in rural South Australia. Honestly, I have no idea how I ended up on a farm in the middle of nowhere (after being a city boy all my life) but I can tell you I love it!

Here's what fuelling and inspiring me:

WHAT I'M LEARNING

Embroidery

At the moment I'm massively into repairing my clothes after taking this great course recently (only $15) on Domestika. I struggle with meditating but mending /embroidery definitely helps me feel centred and relaxed.

WHO I'M FOLLOWING

Pattiegonia

LGBTQ+ representation is needed in natural spaces. Too often our community’s narrative is to flee to large cities for acceptance. I love how Pattiegonia is trying his/her best to challenge that, to share that being in nature is therapeutic and necessary for all of us, particularly anyone dealing with social stress and isolation from queer identities. Nature doesn’t care who we are. Nature just is. And it’s beautiful. And we’re beautiful. Just as we are.

CAMPAIGNS I'M FOLLOWING

Great Forest Case

Words cannot describe how much I love, respect, and admire Jenny and Bob (above) from the Bob Brown Foundation. The Foundation recently called on the Commonwealth to use their powers to protect our nation’s native forests and the wildlife that call them home - this campaign is everything it should and needs to be. Check out more on the Great Forest Case.

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO

Aretha Franklin, The Electrifying Aretha Franklin

image

I can’t say for certain when the first time I ever heard an Aretha Franklin album. Her music was simply always there, in the the same way that Ella’s music was always there. I was weaned on her music. This album is my absolute favourite.

Listen to it here.

As always, thank you for taking the time for wild places and have a great weekend!
