Welcome to Secular Politics!

Dear friends, Hope the new year finds you and your loved ones well. As the new year starts, I have decided to give Substack a try. The focus of this newsletter is secular politics. In this space, you’ll read about public opinion, public officials, voting behavior, and other trends in secular politics and demography. I have added you because you were subscribed to my old TinyLetter newsletter. If you don’t want to continue receiving the newsletter, please unsubscribe; no hard feelings.

I hope to deliver a newsletter entry once a week. The first few entries will be about exploring the world of secular elected officials and candidates. This is a timely topic since, as Hemant Mehta shows in his newsletter, we finally have a Humanist listed in Pew’s “Faith in the Hill” list of the religious affiliation of members of Congress. Likewise, Ron Millar provides a breakdown of the gains secular candidates made in 2022 and who, now in 2023, will become state legislators.

Representation is a subject dear to my heart and one that I did a lot of research on during my grad school days. Over the course of the year, we will be releasing new analyses of original and secondary data exploring the world of secular candidates, elected officials, as well as secular allies. Next week we will be releasing a dashboard that we will update with new data points, as well as new analytics as we get more information and as we continue our analysis of data.
