Why Most People Just "File Taxes" & Very Few Understand Them

Jan 03, 2026 4:49 pm

Most people think taxes are about forms, deadlines, and hoping your accountant “does it right.”

For me, taxes started much earlier—and very differently than most people.

When I was younger, I used to sit beside my dad at his computer while he did our family’s taxes. For 10 years straight.

No shortcuts. No rushing. Just careful thinking.

He’d explain why numbers went where they did.

What income really meant. How deductions worked.

What the government rewarded—and what it quietly penalized.

What can be deducted and what can't. I was often surprised and said "Really?" when he said, "You can deduct that."

At the time, I didn’t realize it, but I was learning the language of the tax system.

That experience shaped everything I do today. Because it taught me that knowledge is power. Because here’s the truth most people never learn:

Taxes aren’t just something you file.

They’re a system you either understand—or pay for not understanding.

Over the years, I’ve seen countless people seemingly do “everything right” and still overpay by thousands—simply because no one ever explained their options to them.

That’s why I’ve opened up time this tax season to help people:

  • Understand how their taxes actually work
  • Identify missed credits, deductions, and opportunities
  • And make sure their tax strategy aligns with their real financial goals

Several people have already booked calls, and I’ll be honest—my availability is filling up quickly. (Thank you to those who already booked calls. :)

Tax season is coming fast, and the earlier we look at things, the more options you'll have.
