A few questions I use when reviewing portfolios

Hi ,
I have been reviewing client portfolios recently, and one thing I always come back to is this:
A portfolio should not only look good when markets are calm.
It should also have a clear plan for what happens when conditions change.
So I thought to share a few questions I often ask when managing client money:
1. If the portfolio drops 15% to 20%, what is the rule?
Do we hold, add more, rebalance, reduce risk, or wait?
2. If cash is needed during a market downturn, which part of the portfolio can be used first?
This helps avoid selling long-term investments at the wrong time.
3. If interest rates, inflation, or the economy changes, what would cause us to adjust the strategy?
A portfolio should have clear triggers, not just react based on emotions.
4. How will this portfolio eventually turn into usable income?
Growth is important, but for retirement planning, income structure matters too.
I find these questions helpful because they shift the focus away from just “what to buy”…
…and towards whether the portfolio is actually built to support real-life needs.
Thought this perspective might be useful for you too.

Zest
