A Trailblazer in Pediatric Complex Disability and Dystonia

Oct 10, 2025 7:38 pm

Dear ,

I'm thrilled to announce that we have a new CEO mentor joining our circle of clinical experts that you have access to as part of your CEO membership - and I'm even more thrilled because she is our first Occupational Therapist to join the team!

It’s with genuine excitement that we welcome a truly extraordinary clinician to our CEO expert panel,

Karen Kangas, OTR/L.

Many of you have already encountered Karen’s wisdom, enthusiasm, and refreshingly unorthodox take on pediatric rehab through her teaching and now, for the first time, you’ll have direct access to her insights and expert support in CEO. If you didn't catch our interview, you can listen here > https://www.wiredondevelopment.com/single-post/karen-kangas-complex-childhood-disability

Karen is internationally recognized in the pediatric therapy community for her out the box thinking for children experiencing the most complex forms of disability, especially those with movement disorders like dystonia, dystonic cerebral palsy, and significant communication challenges. Her expertise is woven from more than five decades of real-world clinical practice, mentoring, and advocacy.

Karen is a fierce advocate for real participation, joy, and agency for children and families - adapting environments, seating, mobility, and assistive technology to move beyond rigid protocols and genuinely center each child’s experience. As an OT, her passion lies in the messy, meaningful, deeply human work of finding what truly helps each child thrive.

You'll want to book a session with Karen to support you in

  • Assessment and management of dystonia and dystonic/dyskinetic cerebral palsy, including understanding movement patterns and surges of tone.
  •  Select, adapt, and troubleshoot Augmentative and Alternative Communications (AAC) solutions for children with communication difficulties
  • Analyzing and adapting classroom and learning environments to support optimal engagement
  • Integrating seating, AAC, and powered mobility

Karen will be available for bookings from next week. Book a session and prepare to have your thinking challenged (in the best way). You’ll leave feeling energized, inspired, and armed with actionable clinical strategies you can put to work right away.

Excited for what Karen will add to your own clinical wisdom (and always championing real excellence),

Mindy
