Onward and Upward Newsletter - June 2022

Hi,
The daughter of a friend (fourteen, vegetarian by choice), while eating avocado on toast for breakfast, recently accused her mother's generation of not caring about the environment. Her mother told her: you are living in a centrally heated house, getting free education, pocket money, you have a mobile phone, new clothes, and a foreign holiday every year. Importing avacados to Ireland is not environmentally friendly. The Amazonian forest is being razed to grow the soya beans you eat. The planes that fly you to the foreign holidays are not environmentally friendly; mobile phones (cells) are not environmentally friendly... The daughter then asked her mother for a lift to school. Her mother looked at her quizzically, and said, 'No. Save the planet. Walk.'
An amusing and true incident, but it seems to me that the 'woke' generation is being programmed towards a self-righteous blame culture, while they continue to enjoy the privileges of being born in an era of technology and communication never before known in the history of humans. Remember CND and Ban the Bomb marches? I believe we did care, and still do.

Authorly News
I have invested in a little bit of advertising in mid-June for The Silence of Children, being the first book in the series, so if anyone has read the book and has not posted a review, I would appreciate your taking the time to do so. And if you are one of the 800+ people who have taken the free book and not read it, this is a timely reminder to read and review! (The first book in the series is still available free; click the image).
Here are the review links, again: Goodreads Amazon Bookbub

Regarding the book proposal for Bookoutre, it turns out that the editor has very strong views on what kind of book she would like. It's been an interesting, and sometimes amusing, bounce of character and plot ideas. Over the weeks, the proposed story has morphed from women's fiction to psychological thriller. Although I've written the first few chapters, and this has now been agreed in principle, I'm well aware that it's not a done deal.
So while I'm waiting I've started on the next book in the series, Suffer the Little Children. I have tentatively marked this for publication next spring, but I'm hoping to get it out later this summer. You will be the first to know.
Last month, I posted news of a friend who just had her first mainstream book published. I got the link wrong, so here it is again. It's a character-based women's fiction, a family mystery spanning three generations. It's not on offer, I'm afraid, but I really enjoyed it.
*** BOOKS FREE OR ON OFFER (mostly) ***
I don't have time to check every book that comes via a book funnel, or a 'swap' promotion with another author, so, if you get a short story or a sample, a badly written book, or anything else that you find irritating, let the author know; don't shoot the messenger! Oh, and even if you choose not to take any of the books from the offers below, do click on some links! It helps my share statistics!
If you're new to my list, and are willing to post an online review of one of my books, email me and I will send you a link to the book of your choice.
I welcome feedback on my writing.
Happy Reading
You have probably received this newsletter because you have accepted one of my books from a promotion. I do hope you wish to continue to follow both my publishing journey, and my storyboards of life here in Ireland, but if not, there is an unsubscribe button below.
