The old farmhouse had been empty for 30 years when we bought it. It was a working farm right up to the time the owner became ill, and the fields were gradually sold off, presumably to pay for his last few years in a nursing home. Life was basic, then, and we were lucky even, that the roof hadn't fallen in, which is a fairly common fate for these old buildings. Electricity had been brought to the house at some time, though there was only ONE socket when we moved in! The house itself is situated 3/4 acre field, which was used for cows, and it took a lot of effort to bring this barren patch of land into use as a garden: mostly shrubbery, fruit and vegetable, with little pockets of wildness. It wasn't a matter of planning and landscaping, most of the plans had to change to accommodate the barren condition of the soil. We discovered the hard way what will and what won't grow in this wet, wind-scoured environment. And, of course, one has to work with the weather rather than try to fight it out...
