From Captain America to Hiring: A Tale of Two Cultures (and How It Impacts Your Team)

Hi ,

Time to read: about 2 mins

Last Friday, I had a fun experience – my son, husband, and I went to see the new Captain America movie.

It was a great film, and it got me thinking about something other than superheroes and special effects: the audience.

Seeing it here in the UK, it was a pretty typical cinema experience – quiet, respectful, everyone focused on the screen.

It got me remembering a movie I saw last year in LA – the new Ghostbusters.

That audience was a completely different story!

People were clapping, cheering, even yelling at the screen (in a good way!).

It was a real communal experience, like everyone was in on the fun together.

This contrast between movie-going cultures really stuck with me, because it reminds me so much of my experience hiring tech, sales, and marketing talent for ambitious, growing companies – both here in the UK and across the pond.

In the US, there's often a real 'team spirit' when it comes to hiring. Companies are more likely to celebrate successes overtly, be open about challenges, and treat the hiring process as a joint effort.

It's like everyone is cheering the team on from the sidelines.

In the UK, it can sometimes feel a bit more… reserved.

Companies might be less vocal about their hiring needs, and the process can be more individualistic. This is not necessarily a bad thing; it's just different.

But here's the thing: building a high-performing team requires a combination of both approaches, regardless of your situation.

You need that US-style 'enthusiasm' and shared vision to get everyone excited about the mission. But you also need that UK-style focus and attention to detail to ensure you're making the right hires.

At TalentJet Group, we understand these nuances.

We've helped companies on both sides of the Atlantic to build incredible teams, and we know what it takes to succeed in each market.

Whether you're looking for a US-style 'rah-rah' approach to hiring or a more measured UK-style strategy, we can help you find the perfect blend.

P.S. Building something worthwhile takes time and effort. Just like a good movie (or a great team!). But the payoff is definitely worth it! 😉
