Introduction

The Mentor Parent Support Program is a subscription-based program created by the Parenting Through Mentorship Academy to empower parents who want to support their children to reach their full potential. In my whole decade of experience working with children and parents, I have come to realize that every child has a genius within and hence an inert desire to excel. The challenge however is receiving the right support from their parents, schools and caregivers. More often than not, the child gets blamed for not working hard or deliberately choosing to perform poorly in school and other settings. When in truth children are not wired this way. No child simply decides to perform badly or fail just to spite a parent or guardian. There are so many factors that can be responsible for the poor performance of children at different phases of their lives and one of the most common, yet ignored ones are the lack of effective support from parents and caregivers especially in the formative years of a child’s life.

In my experience as a classroom teacher and in providing personal support to families I have realized that most times these challenges stem from the parents’ ignorance and complacency which may be unintentional. When parents lack the knowledge and skill needed to give their children what they need and are also oblivious of what to demand of the schools and other stakeholders responsible for their education, solely dependent on the school, which brings us to another challenge.

Many schools we have around are unable to offer our children what they need to thrive. This is because in some cases the owners of these schools set them up as business ventures and neglect the essence of a good education. Other reasons are lack of skilled teachers, inadequate resources and poor curriculum delivery.

 I and my team will be working with you throughout term 1 to help you offer optimal support to your child(ren) in different areas of their learning. Our close support group on WhatsApp will be for accountability, feedback and questions. We would be glad to give quick tips, suggest activities and strategies that will help you optimize their learning experience.
