What Are Your Best Memories Growiing Up?
Apr 12, 2024 6:32 am
Think back to the most pleasant memories of your childhood, what surrounded these memories that made them special?
Mine was play... 💃💃
I remember my dad carrying me on his shoulders while racing my brothers. Then I would tell him I wanted to touch the roof of the butcher house behind our home where my mum stored up sacks of garri and Ogoja yams and palm oil, as a foodstuff 'merchant' that she was. He would take me there and patiently wait for me to prop myself up until I touched its rooftop excitedly.
Another was him telling us stories outside the house under the moonlight. How he would tell the stories of why the tortoise is believed to be the smarter animal, and the best part was him stopping at intervals to sing a song while he played the guitar. Oh, my papa loved to sing...
Yeah, the playful experiences are the memories I have of my Dad who passed on 24 years ago...
Guess what, I did so well in creative writing back in my school days because my imagination, narrative, and descriptive abilities were on point.
This is because storytelling and writing came easily to me, and that's because my head was filled with those lovely stories my papa told me.
That's how I even 'gi dem' A1 in English Language WAEC 😉😄
...and here we are still teaching through storytelling and writing stories, just because my papa played.
