Dear parents, mbok gather here let's have this small conversation...

Eh eh..., hear this loud and clear; your child will NOT automatically give you access into their 'adult life' just because you are their parent.

Yes, you will be mummy and daddy forever, but anything more takes building and connection.

It takes time, commitment and connection between you and your child to build a lasting relationship, just like any other relationship 

And this can be done when you love your child unconditionally, avoid judging them, have a two-way accountability system and an open line of communication.

I talked about this at our last weekly review in the Mentor Parent Support Program, and I also shared some strategies to create a BALANCE between being a non-judgemental parent and being a permissive parent.  

One of these is listening to their stories and gist without over analysing and being biased. 

Rather you assume their age for that moment and listen like the teenager you were many years ago. 

Mbok behave yourself. 

Get all the information you need and then equip yourself and use the information you have then get the perfect opportunity to teach that lesson with no reference to their mistakes.

Watch them make the connection or use prompts and nudges here and there to help them make that connection and self correct and apply this when they encounter similar situations in the near future.

The other one is, you need to stop making habit of criticising their friends. Your teens don't feel like a better people just because you always make them feel their friends are villains.

Hmm...as they grow they too become loyal to their friends and protect them. 

So yes, they will lock up about their friends if you keep criticising them, you hear?
