Tune in to the Choosing Acceptance Podcast E34 - Unlocking the Secrets of Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities

Jun 01, 2024 6:00 pm

Hi everyone,

Are you or a loved one struggling with non-verbal learning disabilities (NVLD)? If so, you won't want to miss our latest episode of the Choosing Acceptance Podcast.

In this eye-opening episode, we dive deep into the world of NVLD to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of this often-misunderstood condition. Our host, Marie Mason, welcomes back special co-host Ibuka Jestick to guide us through the key insights.

What is NVLD? NVLD refers to a set of challenges primarily involving difficulties with non-verbal skills. This can include motor coordination, visual-spatial abilities, and social interactions - as opposed to language-based skills like reading and writing.

The three common causes of NVLD are neurological factors, genetic factors, and environmental factors. Symptoms can include clumsiness, trouble interpreting non-verbal cues, and struggles with organization and abstract thinking.

But there is hope! Our experts outline three effective solutions:

  1. Targeted therapy sessions to develop motor skills
  2. Visual-spatial training to improve spatial awareness
  3. Social skills coaching to navigate social interactions

Plus, we share three valuable resources for those with NVLD:

  1. Support groups and online forums
  2. Specialized education programs
  3. Assistive technology and apps

The main takeaway tip? Seek professional help early. Early intervention and support can make a huge difference in the lives of those with NVLD.

A Note from Marie "I am so grateful to have you, our loyal listeners, as part of the Choosing Acceptance community. This podcast has been a labor of love, and I am thrilled to have shared 12 episodes with you over the past 3 months.

However, as I mentioned, I will be taking a break from the podcast for the next 3-6 months to focus on a big move for my family. But don't worry - we'll still have plenty of valuable content for you to enjoy in the meantime. And when I return, I'll be excited to interview new guests and tackle even more topics related to learning disabilities.

Regardless, please continue to watch the replay episodes, share your feedback, and let me know if there are any topics you'd like us to cover in the future. I read every comment and message, and I can't wait to reconnect in the coming months.

We have a few more episodes to release so be on the LOOKOUT for more Episodes this summer.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you again soon on the Choosing Acceptance Podcast!"

Until next time, this is Marie Mason and Ibuka Jestick signing off. Have a great week, everyone!

πŸŽ“A Special Graduation message to my son and the class of 2024!

On this sunny June 1st, me and my husband are eagerly preparing for summer. If anyone resides in the USA or Canada, you're likely anticipating warm days, outdoor adventures, and perhaps a well-deserved vacation. But there’s an even more exciting event on the horizon.

On June 1st, my family prepares for summer and our son's upcoming high school graduation on June 3. Despite the many challenges like a move and part-time job, our son showed responsibility, commitment, dedication and resilience. The family eagerly anticipates celebrating his achievements and looks forward to a joyful and restful summer ahead.  We are eagerly awaiting Charles to complete a year at his part-time job and his last day is on June 6th.  Then we can pursue our summer plans. Congratulations to our son Charles, and may this summer be filled with joy, new beginnings, and cherished memories!

A special Congratulations to the class of 2024! No matter what grade you graduated from, you have been through so much together during all the years you have been in school. This has been a challenging time, but you have persevered and should be proud of your accomplishments. Wishing you all the best as you move on to the next chapter.

Special note to our listeners:

Love to celebrate your graduate on our summer podcast series during the top tips of the week we will make a short announcement for free. Let me know what message you want to share and send a recent picture of your graduate.

Warm Wishes,

Marie Mason
