How I got 50+ experts to say YES to me as a podcast beginner!

The easy part is the interview, no really it is and as the host you get to sit back and listen to your guest 80% of the time. The 20% is you asking the questions and controlling the conversation. But before you get to the conversation part, you need to find the guests and that's the hard part for most.

How did I start my first podcast in March, launch in June and by September have 50 expert interviews published with no prior podcasting experience? I worked my ass off, but I got some early guests to say YES to me and I ran with it and kept up the momentum.

I can remember getting my first YES and I'm surprised how easy it was. Yes, I had a few NO's but a received a lot more YES's.

I reached out to people in my existing network that I was on friendly terms with and asked them if they'd be willing to support my new podcast and then secondly if I could interview them as one of only 52 experts to appear on Season 1.

What they liked about this is:

  • I approached them to be an expert
  • I boosted their ego and recognized them as an expert
  • I complimented them on their success
  • I asked them for their opinion and advice
  • I chose them as 1 of 52 experts to appear on the podcast

Although, I don't know too much about psychology, what I do know is that when you lift someone up and make them feel special, you instantly build rapport and make yourself instantly likeable. It's a great way to make a great first impression too.

Most people will say that you will get more NO's when you are starting out, but if you follow the above and below tips you'll surprise yourself with more people saying YES.

Choose one of these to help you to build rapport in your messaging.

  1. Find something that you have in common with your guest and mention it
  2. Find a recent post of theirs, watch a recent video, listen to a recent interview and mention what you liked about it.

Remember you want to make a great first impression, so keep in mind that you want them to feel awesome and empowered, not belittled or criticised for what they could do better.
