Let's talk about How to Handle Forgetfulness in Public Speaking

Dear , has this ever happened to you?

You're on stage, speaking confidently, then suddenly—blank! You lose your train of thought or forget everything you planned to say.

In that moment, panic sets in. You feel lost, embarrassed, and wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole.

But what if I told you that you never have to experience that again? That there’s a way to stay in control, even when forgetfulness strikes?

Here’s how you can handle and prevent forgetfulness in public speaking:

1. Practice, Prepare, and Rehearse (Repeat!)

Avoid relying on AI-generated content unless you're willing to study and internalize it thoroughly. Instead, write your own speech and practice it out loud. The most critical step? Rehearsal. Repetition strengthens memory, helping you retain key points effortlessly.

2. Use a Simplified Structure

Many speakers forget their speech because they use complex, disorganized formats. The brain thrives on order and structure. A well-structured speech is easier to remember. That’s why, at Fordax, we dedicate an entire session to Speech Structure—teaching our students a simplified framework that enhances recall.

3. Use Presentation Cues or Notes

If you're over 33 and juggling multiple responsibilities (especially in Nigeria), your mind is already overloaded. Support your memory with short notes or presentation cues. In our training, we teach professionals how to use notes and PowerPoint effectively to stay on track without appearing scripted.

4. Engage the Audience for Help

If you momentarily forget a point—especially one you’ve already hinted at—simply ask the audience for help. They will gladly remind you! This not only lightens the mood but also strengthens your connection with them.

So, what should you do when you forget something on stage?

I'll answer this in my next message. If I receive over 100 positive responses, I’ll even create a short video to demonstrate.
