Teacher Ryane Speaks for Teachers!

Welcome Teachers!

It takes a lot of time to find the right resources for your adult ESL learners. Adult learners don't want to see pages with cute clip art or rainbows. They feel vulnerable in your classroom and they want respect and belonging.

They're also language learners! They want instructions that quickly make sense because cognitive overload is real! They want materials that are motivating to work through, because we've all trudged through a fill in the blank. They want to speak, but they need structure because their level of language makes them nervous or shy.

As teachers, we need materials that are easy to understand and creative. We also need our classes to be fun, but useful. We need our students to get out of their textbooks sometimes and use language in real time.

These are the types of resources I create because that is the kind of classroom I have. I want my room to be the loudest in the building because my students are so wrapped up in a discussion that their brains are processing language without the grit it takes to go through a boring textbook. It's fun, but practical. It meets multiple language goals at once.

I taught for many years in university intensive English programs and as our programs became less diverse and populated, I had to adjust my materials and my teaching style to accommodate more levels at the same time. I had to find ways to be open-ended with structure. These are the types of materials I used. I hope they can help you the challenges you face in your own teaching. I hope they bring some joy and laughter back into your classroom as well.
