Two book reviews

The Light Through the Leaves by Glendy Vanderah

By the time I started crying for the second time, I gave up on this book. Maybe it was because just recently I’d watched two films that made me cry, or because every day I turn on the TV and watch the news I cry? The first film was Cyrano.

Haley Bennett and Peter Dinklage do an amazing job with both acting and singing, but Peter’s acting is second to none. When the soldiers sing ‘Wherever I fall’ I couldn’t help but think of the Ukrainian soldiers and couldn’t stop crying. I know this story, so I knew the ending already, still, it didn’t stop me from crying! The simple story of ‘will a woman choose a man for his looks or for his brains’ is encased with beautiful poetical statements and stunning songs.

The second film was CODA. Boy, what a great film! Emilia Jones has such a great voice, the story was moving, and when her father (Troy Kotsur) touches her throat so he can feel her singing (he's deaf) I was in bits and going through the tissues at a fast rate!

So maybe because I’ve been crying so much, I just didn’t fancy reading a book that evoked such emotions. The first time I cried was when she ‘lost’ her baby, the second was when she walked away from her boys believing she wasn’t a fit mother to look after them. Well now, I am a mum of four boys so this just did me in and I shut the book. Having said that, I need to say that Glendy Vanderah’s prose is exquisite! The writing flows so beautifully that it upset me that I couldn’t continue. So if you like books by brilliant authors that have a haunting story, then I really recommend this book. The writing really is top-notch. Definitely, a 5-star book, and I've kept it on my kindle so I may go back to finish it.

The School Mistress by Tess Thompson

And sigh… this might not have the eloquence of The Light Through the Trees but it was a sheer delight to read. I could switch off and relax, and that’s just what I wanted.

It isn’t the most perfectly edited book, nor is it particularly Christian, but it was a pleasure to read. Very easy to follow, no taxing or stressful plots, just a very sweet historical romance that carried me off and took me to a place in history that I would love to have been. And Emerson Pass, Colorado wow it sounds divine, and the snow and the mountains, and sweet conversation of yesteryear… oh I was totally in my happy-peaceful place! So if you would like a quick, easy read that won’t tax your brain this is it. 4 stars from me.
