My latest book review

In my quest to continually better my writing skills, I devour books. Picking up bestsellers I’m searching for their magical ingredients – what makes this book a Wall Street Journal & Amason worldwide bestseller? Is it the characters, plot or writing style?

I really enjoyed this book; it’s very well-written with a superb pace, wonderful characters and a great plot. I loved the delicate details that were just enough to firmly put you in Victorian London without bogging down the story. I raced through this book, but then I’m a wholehearted magic fan!

It starts in London in 1885, where an eleven-year-old Elsie accidentally causes the workhouse to burn down. Then it jumps to 10 years later where we find Elsie living as a servant in the house of Ogden the painter. Mysterious notes have followed Elsie for the last ten years, requesting her to break spells that have been placed on certain things. Convinced she is working for the greater good she takes pride in her clandestine activities.

Bacchus has sailed from Barbados to seek a certain spell he is desperate to have. Denied access to it by the Atheneum (court of magic users) Bacchus is determined to find a way by any means.

Thrown together by their magic, Elsie and Bacchus begin working side-by-side despite their low opinion of each other. Soon, however, their annoyance at each other starts turning to something more than friendship. Great ‘love’ slow-burner. Packed with magic and excitement, I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable read, highly recommend.

With 7,569 Amazon US reviews with the average rating of 4.3 I'm not the only one who thinks this is a good book.
