"If this course was a meal, it would be chicken biryani. A little spicy, so you needed breaks for water. But juicy and delicious and moreish. You'd want to keep coming to it, and possibly store the recipe in your handwritten book of recipes."

Written by J.F.Zaidi, Writing Circle Facilitator

Who is this workshop designed for : Counsellors, psychotherapists, coaches and health workers are welcome to attend this workshop.

This experiential 2-day course focuses on creative writing and its use within therapy, therapeutic settings and self-supervision.

Therapists often work with client’s writing, or encourage clients to create within, or between, sessions. Some therapists have trained to be ‘poetry therapists’ and divide sessions between writing and discussion of the text, accelerating the process, or evincing new strands to the therapeutic work.

There is a risk to introducing writing, as it is revealing and sometimes walks the line between vulnerability and healing; there can be concerns about ‘quality’, which therapists can allay with a good understanding of creative writing as both a magnifying and softening tool, to say the ‘unsayable’, or to understand experience in a more tangible form.

Some counsellors and psychotherapists use creative writing as part of their own reflective practice to understand transferential relationships, create boundaries between sessions, and for personal and professional development.

Through experiential practice, this workshop will explore some helpful techniques and raise confidence in using the written (and spoken) word.

The workshop will focus on a range of applications, including:

·       Supporting client metaphors

·       Concrete and abstract images into words – poetry as resource

·       Narratives and counter-narratives

·       Reflective practice – employing form for clients and self-supervision

·       Autobiographical fiction

·       Applications and limitations

An empathic, relational approach will be experienced first hand as the process of the training is trauma-informed.

"I really appreciated the way Claire made us feel comfortable and under no obligation to share work. Paradoxically this made it easier to share. Not only did I learn lots and come away with new ideas, it was a very positive experience of online group work."

FREE POEM - BE CAREFUL - TRIGGER WARNING

Care By Claire Williamson

for Terri

You carry your daughter's coffin yourself

in the two hands that held her,

resting with feathers of black hair

a pulsing fledgling on your skin.

Not even an arm's span of white wood,

you place her on the table,

with the backdrop, her name 'Chloe' and a teddy picked out

in cream chrysanthemums, pink gerbera buttons.

This is it. The end of tubes and operations.

The end of the children's hospital's well-trained nurses;

other parents, some as young as you, still glide

between intensive care and home, like ghosts.

It never ends though, does it?

The memory of her small body in, and on, your body

united warm on warm.

No end to the care that needs more

than two hands to hold it;

that surges on sleepless nights,

when you are with your other children,

those of strangers,

at the supermarket checkout,

passing the infirmary doors.
