CONTENT OF THE COURSE:
Contrary to the myth that both clients and therapist cease to be sexual beings once they start working together, we know that sexual attraction, desire and erotic transference phenomena take place in the consulting room. This ranges from simply liking each other and enjoying each other’s company, to flirtations, infatuations, and in some cases, erotic transference phenomena – both positive and negative. This can continue all the way through to stalking and various forms of exaggerated control.
It is no wonder that, when these processes occur, inexperienced therapists run for the hills and clients might never make it to the next session.
This seminar takes the position that these phenomena are an integral part of the therapeutic process rather than an interruption to it (as Freud thought for a while). They are not only indicative of the deep bond that accompanies effective therapy, but the therapist needs to be able to utilise these for their work.
Questions to ponder:
Are sexual attraction and erotic transference the same?
What do they mean when they occur?
How do we work with these?
What insight and resources are necessary to work with sexual processes in the consulting room?
Do these occur with clients who come as a couple? Or just those who come for one-to-one therapy?
Does erotic transference only occur between heterosexual female clients and male analysts?
We shall work with both theoretical presentations as well as skills training in pairs, triads or small group work. These seminars work at some depth (level 7) and are a times emotionally demanding. Participants might find it useful to arrive rested and or take a day off afterwards, for self care and further reflection

"Erotic transference and countertransference as seen in the TV series In Treatment"
The complexities of erotic transference and countertransference—and the challenges they pose within the therapeutic relationship—are powerfully portrayed in the first season of HBO’s drama In Treatment, starring Gabriel Byrne as psychotherapist Dr Paul Weston. The series opens with his Monday 9am client, Laura, who boldly asks, “Am I the first patient to fall in love with you, Paul?” His measured response is, “I’m not an option,” yet he eventually finds himself in Laura’s bedroom, leading to the breakdown of his marriage. A scene capturing the dynamics of transference and countertransference between Paul and Laura can be viewed on YouTube.
You can see a clip of how the transference/countertransference plays out between Laura and Paul on You Tube.
