About this event
Because the impact of trauma is held in the body - as well as the mind - the healing of child sexual abuse happens most effectively when both mind and body are involved. Pesso Boyden System of Psychotherapy (PBSP) is a body-based therapy.
As Bessel Van der Kolk - renowned trauma specialist and admirer of Al Pesso’s work - said, “The healing tableaus of [PBSP] structures offer an experience that many participants would have never believed was possible for them: to be welcomed into a world where people delight in them, protect them, meet their needs and make you feel at home.” (from his book ‘The Body Keeps the Score’).
PBSP has a comprehensive theoretical framework for working with child sexual abuse. This impacts bottom up, brain stem responses, reflexes and automatic survival patterns as well as with the top down parts, involved in thinking, speaking, and our current emotional awareness.
Juliet will share a PBSP model: the 10 themes that commonly arise when working with people who were sexually abused as children. Juliet will be showing 4 short films, which are extracts of client sessions, to give a powerful illustration of how PBSP works with the body.
Whilst recognising that the majority of people attending this talk will not be trained PBSP therapists, Juliet hopes to alert them to some of the more obscure needs of clients who are dealing with these issues.
NB This talk was first given in July 2021, and that talk is available on jandw.thinkific.com - and much of the content will be repeated.
QUOTE & FREE CHAPTER FROM
Bessel Van Der Kolk - Trauma Specialist from Boston
He says "I actually use [Pesso Boyden] psychodramas - the subject of chapter 18 of my book (CLICK HERE TO READ THIS CHAPTER FROM THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE). I should do much more of it, because it’s the only thing that I feel really works, and that’s the stuff I learned from Al Pesso is to actually give people a visceral experience of what it would have been like as a small kid to have people be there for you. And it’s a theater of make-believe where you really start, regress and be like it and then very much like based on the old gestalt thing that we did back then. You once again feel like a three year old and you really identify all the things, how you were hurt, and then you choose somebody to say, “Will you play my ideal mom?” and say, how do you want this person to hold you and that person holds you in a particular way and the person says, “If I had been there when you were three years old, I would have been with you, I would have protected you.” And you set up enough of a trance experience in the workshop that people actually very deeply feel what it would have been like to have been held like that. It’s absolutely transformative."
