don't be shy! But do be kind

Hello fellow reader,
A few years ago I happened upon an interview of Lois Lowry (author of The Giver) who talked about receiving letters in the mail from readers all across the world, all throughout the years since the publication of her book, telling her how much the book meant to them.
She had tears in her eyes and her voice wobbled with emotion as she spoke about how much those letters meant to her.
I know in this day and age we rarely take the time to write letters. We’re all so busy all the time that even getting those emails from Amazon or Barnes&Noble prompting us to review a recent purchase is a tad annoying. But I want to encourage you to write to the author whose book you really love.
A few weeks ago, an email popped up in my inbox from a reader who had read my mythological speculative fiction book, An Audience with the King. The first words I saw were:
“thank you for ... “An audience With the King”. I loved, loved, loved that book.."
Now, I’m an Enneagram 3 who grew up in a house with emotionally detached parents, so it takes a lot to bring a tear to my eye, but this reader did it. I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to hear that my book meant something to her. Whether I make money on that book in the coming years or not doesn’t really matter right now. Because I have that email printed in my journal and knowing that it made a difference to one person means so much more than green paper.
I encourage you to take time to message, email or review one of your favorite authors this week. You could be the person who makes their week!
