World cup can't stop me reading

Hello fellow reader,

December and the World Cup are competing for center stage at my house these days. At the moment our porch looks like this: awaiting the final game of the first round.

While I'm a proud American, it's my husband who is the soccer fan, so I try no to usurp that.

Actually, I kinda like it. As you can tell. I also get a kick out of making my family look a bit ridiculous. Lol. Anyone else watching the World Cup?

While we slowly get Christmas wreaths up and stocking hung, I'm continuing to write Crossing Zamora, the book that got me across the finish line for NaNoWriMo since it is the writing I focused on this past month. Not that it's December 1st though I'm itching to get Cornered finished and I also have to finish up a non-fiction project that I'm a bit behind on.

And yet! I'm a bit disappointed in myself because I can't come up with a good Christmas short story so far. I wanted to have one at least drafted but perhaps that will still come. Maybe once it snows....

I started reading a book in French class that I remembered I had actually already read (in English) in college. I can't remember how I found it, but I'm so glad that I've rediscovered it. The writing is incredible. The way Sagan (the writer) tells so much in just a few words or a one line of dialogue is very impressive. Something I yearn to achieve in my writing!

The name of the book, even in English, is Bonjour Tristesse. Have you read it? You can find it here if you are interested in it. Let me know what you think if you've read it or decide to read it!

Before I go on to books for you, I want to invite you to a webinar I'm hosting next week with author Sarah Elisabeth Sawyer. Sarah is a historical fiction author who also teaches writers how to depict Native American characters well.

Being Choctaw herself, it's important to Sarah that other writers have access to learning about the cultures and differences in Native American culture. That's why she promotes her webinar Top Question Fiction Authors Have About Native Americans.

The webinar I'm hosting for her will take place on December 9th at 1pmEST/12CT. If you're interested, you can sign up for it here. It's free!

Manhattan, 1908. Margaret Jennings is nursing a bruised heart. Socially tainted by a broken engagement and ignored by her parents, she’s humiliated when a night of rebellion leads to an arrest and another family scandal. Shipped off to Oklahoma to help a friend with her down-on-his-luck brother, she takes on the task of facing the grumpy man with good-spirited wit.

Penniless and on the verge of losing his practice and home, he’s furious when his sister shows up on his doorstep accompanied by a beautiful upper-crust stranger. Expected to head back to New York with his tail between his legs, he marches off to the saloon for some much-needed whiskey—only to wind up injured and unfit for travel.

Excited by a chance to postpone a return to her staid existence, Margaret volunteers to stay and care for the unhappy physician with a hidden tender side. While Bart does his darndest to drive away the charming woman who seems both a match for his vinegar and a salve for his spirit.
