I was playing basketball yesterday

It was just my friend and I

But then a kid arrived, asked to play

In an instant I said yes

Not realizing how this would be perceived by my friend

I was having fun, the 1st grader made 3 shots on a NBA sized hoop

I saw that as beautiful, then his sister came to play as well, just amazing

But when we left my friend was angry, disappointed, seeing it as a waste of time

Initially I was just shocked, like wow

I didn't understand how he could be perceiving what we did in that manner

But I had to dial back, and be curious, rather than forcing my perspective upon him

Even though I didn't necessarily feel bad, I said sorry to him, I could have said no to the children

But he even uttered, 'who would say no to them'?

The conflict became clear

Part of him know we were doing the right thing

While another part of him was struggling

Now bottom line is, we both learned

I observed the nature of how my friend saw the situation, I asked him questions, did my best to understand why he was confused, angry and disappointed

We can't go back in time

I expressed that sometimes it not about us, but others

To have compassion, both children had a blast playing with us

He came around to the point

What's my point here?

Listen, life is not always going to line up with our expectations, our wants, our preferences

And that's okay, as long as we use our awareness to observe how we are operating

Rather than judging my friend, I created space in my heart to do my best to hear him out

This is the game of life

To figure out how to channel compassion every living moment

How to use your awareness in a way that you are fully here, now

And when you learn how to do that, all of life changes, the things which used to create anger, confusion, insecurity, fear, greed, all of that can be understood and then absolutely dissipated
