Understanding authority - Using questions to propel your growth

It's great to ask questions and to view yourself as a healthy skeptic.

Life is very complicated and if we don't ask quality questions we will find ourselves mindlessly believing all that others tell us.

This is not healthy.

We must develop our abilities, we want to think clearly, reflect wisely and act deliberately.

Where we place our idea of authority will shape how we grow, It's helpful to listen to many different high quality sources and to cross reference your favorite lessons between the entirety of them all.

Opening your mind

The importance of listening and learning from many sources can't be forgotten.

If we don't do this we create huge blind spots and areas of potential bias due to the regularity of the content.

Close-mindedness is one of the most destructive qualities a human can possess.

It sabotages your potential for greatness.

It's easy to fall down the slippery slope that is close-mindedness, this emphasizes the value in reflection, in taking time to question your style of thinking, feeling and acting.

When you listen to many sources your mind opens.

You realize how many different styles of perception there is.

There's great power in being an open person, you know that you don't know and understand life is meant to be a constant journey of learning and sharpening yourself.

If we follow this open route of pursuing true curiosity we will find passion.

A great place to put some authority is in your natural interest...

You're interested in that for a reason, you will have great success pursuing that path if you view it as an opportunity to add skills to your belt and you give your top notch effort.

So ask: Where do I place authority?

Am I following any of my natural interest?

Can I combine natural interest with an opportunity to make a living?

Allow for flow

One giant trap is placing authority in the incorrect places.

In becoming a slave to a certain style of thinking, so rigid in your thinking that you have no versatility...

This is the closed mind. Now there's a difference between going through a phase of education and becoming a slave to a style of thought.

It's okay to binge a certain topic for a bit.

Be sure that you do move on once you've covered a lot of material, or even stay on the topic but switch to a new teacher.

The bottom line is each person has special angles that they see the world from and all perceptions should be put into consideration.

Of course some will be better than others.

You can make that call.

Another place we don't want to put authority is our ego...

The ego is so attached to things.

Materials, people, outcomes and so on.

The ego is your sense of self, the thing that you refer to as I, and then you have another side...

This is the side of you who just is, this is who you're when you're deeply immersed in an activity.

The one who lives in the present and flows with each moment, you know when you do something and loose track of time.

The ego is very focused on survival.

The other side is more focused on thriving and enjoying life.

These are very detailed differentiations that you must make, and once you begin to become aware of how the ego tends to operate you can catch it in the moment.

Remember most of your suffering is creating by your egos overthinking, so if you can notice when it's happening a choose to focus back on flowing with life, doing an activity that brings you inner peace, you'll have reduced your stress drastically.

Understand the lens

Nobody will ever do for you what you must do for yourself.

The truth in relation to authority is that you can learn from others and they can help you out, but the work must be executed by you.

Place some authority in your own damn ability.

Believe in who you can become.

See knowing that nobody is coming to save you may hurt initially, after that you will feel powerful, it's in your hands to create something great.

Now...

It's very important that you have faith in not only yourself but in whoever built this reality. Think with me for a moment, ponder a bit on how infinite the oceans are, how complex your body is, like we have so many SYSTEMS working at once it's INSANE.

How beautiful, yet brutal nature is...

The creator of all this is one wise entity.

So you want to mix this combination of taking daily practical action to better yourself while trusting that life is unfolding in just the right way, as the wise creator knows what it's doing with your life.

You stray too far to either of these sides and you'll have tough situations befall you.

Life needs balance.

Pour intentional effort in educating yourself on both areas and you'll be grateful you did.

When you're developing your practical skills be sure that you don't forget where you began, it's easy to be hard on yourself if you're too zoomed in.

Take a step back and recognize how much you've improved.

Clarity is priceless

If you want to have any authority in your own ability you must learn how to create a clear mind.

If you're confused and constantly second guessing yourself you will have no faith in your own ability. Building a clear mind should be one of your top priorities.

The quality of your life is interconnected with the quality of your mind.

One of the most common traps people fall into is allowing their mind to become a prison, this is rooted in lacking awareness.

See, if you have authority in your ability, you trust that you can solve the situation, you're aware that challenges are just an opportunity in disguise.

One of the greatest tricks a peaceful mind uses is mental re-frames.

I just gave you an example above with the opportunity and challenge re-frame.

As you read these letters you'll start realizing how connected so many pieces of life are.

This is why I enjoy learning about psychology, the mass amount of feedback loops involved is so interesting...

It's as if I'm following an old treasure map and have to connect a bunch of hints to find the treasure chest.

Another trap that destroys your authority in your own ability is self doubt.

Self doubt is usually rooted in forms of insecurity.

It's priceless when someone can be honest with themselves and admit to their insecurities, without this healing can't occur.

Once recognizing the insecurity you have to take confidence building action over an extended period of time and pay attention to your progress and eventually the self doubt will dissipate.

It’s about becoming

What most of life's growth is founded upon is quality questioning.

It's vital that we don't believe what we're told without first questioning it.

Understanding the concepts of deception and manipulation are of the utmost importance when speaking on asking questions.

Even topics like psychology and persuasion come into play big time.

The truth is that many humans love to think that they're right, they're playing petty status games and view life through this group thinking lens.

These are the fools who believe what they're told without doing any deeper examination.

See, I don't think that I'm right, I'm just sharing what makes SENSE to me...

And some people tend to feel it makes sense to them too, well that's cool.

Doesn't mean we're correct.

I've already written and spoken many things that later I've thought about and may have changed how I see the situation, that's just fine.

I think that's actually a great sign, see we should continuously be learning and iterating on our former beliefs and ways of thinking.

If you're not growing, you're dying.

That line makes sense, as the only constant in life is change.

Do you like how I'm combining cliches? lol.

Any teacher or form of information that implies you should simply believe them, you should immediately be cautious if you get that vibe.

If they're so TRUE they won't have to work hard to get you to trust them, that process will unfold so smoothly and naturally.

One of the most helpful tips I can give you in life is that often just knowing the red flags is enough to get you by, you don't need to know exactly what to do...

Just know what you can't be doing and you'll find your way.

Test this out

If you increase the quality of your questions your life will get better.

So you can focus on a few things.

It's the smallest of details that are going to change your questions from shit to healthy.

Things like the language you use, the way you frame the question and the depth of the question.

-Put a journal / pen in a place you know you'll use it

-If you're new journal for literally 1 minute and build from there

-Frame the question to lead to a positive answer

(What do I need to do to improve? - NOT What's wrong with me?)

-It's okay to start with simple questions but you do want to investigate deeper

How you become great is to stack consistent days of learning.

It's not magic.

If you don't quit and you invest your energy intentionally over-time the only outcome is you'll become great.

It's also easier if you believe this, self doubt is a killer.

Test the theory yourself!

Much love

So don't believe what I said here today, consider it and test it with your direct experience.

Any actions I gave you, try them out for a week and see how they make you feel.

Carry this principle of healthy skepticism through your life and I bet you'll thank me later.

Can you start to lookout for people who simply believe everything they're told?

Do you have any deep rooted beliefs that you are overly attached to?

(hint: some of the TRUEST things are not tangible... Come to your own conclusion)

(It's important not to be too attached to anything in life, as change is inevitable and you'll create your own suffering by attaching)
